China calls on Thailand and Cambodia to cease fire and maintain calm

On July 27-28, 2025, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry affirmed that Beijing calls on both sides to remain calm, exercise restraint and achieve an early ceasefire, and that China will maintain close communication and promote peace between the two countries.

China offers to play an impartial role as a mediator

In July 2025, at the ASEAN conference in Malaysia, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pledged to maintain an “objective and impartial” stance, and is willing to support reconciliation and promote dialogue between the two sides. He also proposed to strengthen security cooperation to combat cross-border crimes such as online fraud, gambling, smuggling, etc.

On August 14, 2025, China held a trilateral diplomatic meeting with Thailand and Cambodia in China. Following that, on August 15, Beijing reaffirmed its desire to restore peace and its willingness to support the two countries in maintaining the agreement they had reached.

There have been no official reports or reliable sources indicating that China has warned Thailand for “interfering” in Cambodian criminal areas.

Instead, China has repeatedly expressed its neutral stance, proposed peaceful mediation, and called for cooperation to effectively address cross-border crimes.

The border dispute with Cambodia has raised fears of a military confrontation, with both sides deploying forces in the border area. Paetongtarn has said she is committed to finding a peaceful solution but is ready to do whatever it takes to protect Thailand’s sovereignty.

In a leaked phone call with Cambodia on June 15, she acknowledged being under intense pressure at home and urged Mr Hun Sen “not to listen to the other side,” referring to an influential Thai general in charge of the border area. On June 18, Cambodia's Defense Ministry accused Thailand of violating its sovereignty through drone flights, trench digging and troop deployments, allegations Bangkok denied.
